Nakshi Kantha

the video above is about nakashi kantha

There are various types of Kantha work. One is nakashi kantha here is the link http://sos-arsenic.net/lovingbengal/quilt.html for information about Kantha.
Nakshi kantha, a type of embroidered quilt, is a type of folk art of Bangladesh and West Bengal ,

India. The art has been practiced in rural Bengal for centuries. The basic material used is thread and old cloth Kanthas are made throughout Bangladesh, but the greater Mymensingh, Rajshahi , Faridpurand, Jessore and Khulna areas are most famous for this craft.

The colourful patterns and designs that are embroidered resulted in the name "Nakshi Kantha", which was derived from the Bengali word "naksha", which refers to artistic patterns The early kanthas had a white background accented with red, blue and black embroidery; later yellow, green, pink and other colours were also included.

The running stich called "kantha stitch" is the main stitch used for the purpose. Traditionally, kantha was produced for the use of the family. Today, after the revival of the nakshi kantha, they are produced commercially.

The traditional embriodries……….

kantha embroidery, popular in West Bengal in India, is a form of running stitch used to decorate saris, shirts, shawls, pillows covers, cushion covers, blankets and many other everyday household fabrics across cotton and silk

I learnt about   Kantha when I was in my BSc (HomeScience in clothing and textile class)  and I discovered Sashiko embroidery more than 10 years ago. It was just like kantha and the design resemble very much with my grandmaa’s darning stitches. I bought and read a book on the subject, which described methods for marking the designs on fabric, as well as the stitching technique, but I was never quite ready to actually try it. Over the years, I encountered an article or two on the subject, which I read with interest, but didn't pursue further. Recently  I read and fallowed  to know the details from herehere and  here

Kantha bag a sneak peek

Can I name  this A Kantha bag? Its from the Rajkamal Parkashan stall in 20th  World Book Fair which was held from Feb 25 to 4th March at Pragati Maidan. I am posting  it after the fair in March itself.

There are so many versions of this bag from the R Parkashan to distribute the consumers with purchases worth…………..and to their ones! I think so! Because it was given to my writer

daughter without any purchases!!!!!!!!How cute! Obliged! Oh were ditto copy of that is in pic here, like this one. All were the same version of this pictured above. I’m looking forward to seeing them. The details are lovely, with all the tiny plain stitches.

There is a “Lot” of handwork here!

The next variation in this bag is Batik  pieces attached on the lower and upper part of the bag. There is less handwork on it, and that puts it at an easier price point for Dear one’s and consumers.

This was bought from a small production run (as told by one of the chap at shop), and they were all sold to our some of our wonderful retailers based on their pre-orders.

Although there is less handwork (contradictory comments from above isn’t it   ) on these bags, the detailing is still exquisite.
