MILLENNIUM HOUSE HOLD HINTS

While going thru  the computer files today, i  stumbled upon an article which was published in Women's Era in 2000, that magazine is not with me anymore, I am blogging it here.

In those(year 2000) days I was haunted by the ghost of Millennium, I wrote many articles, for example --- Millennium House Hold Hints, Millennium Jam Making, Millennium Mat Making, Millennium Chocolate Making etc. they were also published in different magazines.

The third millennium is full of challenges for the millennium housewives. Millennium household hints will surely help them to met the challenges of house hold small problems. The readers of Women’s Era can get rid of  their some of  the problems by following the hints that that fallows:

Metallic Embroidery

To clean metallic embroidery on a satin or other dress, dip a soft baby brush in ordinary bicarbonate of soda, brush into the embroidery, leave for a few minutes, then remove with a second soft , clean brush.  Cream of tarter or powdered magnesia may be used in the same way.

Leather jacket

Leather jacket which are labelled washable can be laundered in warm water using good quality soap or soapflakes.  The water should be comfortable to the hands and a rich lather should be made before the leather garment is immersed in suds.  When the leather is hard, add enough soap flacks to ¼ litre of  hot water to make rich lather, stir in a table spoonful of olive oil or glycerine, pour into a saucepan. Heat and boil for one minute.  Add sufficient cold water to make a cool, rich lather and wash leather garment in this.  Rinse in clear warm water.

Ties

Silk ties should never be worn day after day but rested between wear.  Never wash, always send for dry cleaning.

Velvet

To remove dust , fluff and hair from velvet, damp the brushes of a clothes brush with a few drops of surgical or methylated spirit and lightly brush the velvet at once.  This method is effective on a dark suit also.

Front door

If strong sunlight shines directly on to a front door, blistering the paint work, once every 2 or 3 weeks moisten a cloth with olive and rub the door thoroughly with this.  Leave for a few minutes, then polish with a clean dry duster to remove surplus oil.  An alternative is to use a sun blind or curtain.

Vases

If vases are filled with sand when they are being used for table decoration or as ornaments they will be less likely to be knocked over and broken. To stop dust collecting in narrow, long-necked vases which are difficult to clean, plug the neck with cotton wool, pushed down just for enough to be out of sight.  Dust will collect on the top of the wool only the cotton wool plugs can be replaced quickly whenever the vases are washed.

Vacuum flask

To remove taint & stain in vacuum flask pour a teaspoonful of vinegar into the bottom of the flask and add the broken shell of an egg and half a teaspoonful of warm water ; shake thoroughly, leave to stand as long as possible, then shake again and rinse well.

Kitchen surfaces

According to statistics, half a litre of grease is vaporised on to kitchen surfaces everyday.  This means that enamel, plastics, chrome tiles & paint work gradually become dulled with film of grease and dirt and this applies particularly to white and pastel surfaces.  Hot synthetic detergent suds will remove the grease and a white silicone cream or wax will protect the surfaces afterwards. Alternatively use a combination cleaner-polish such as Mello, this will dissolve grease and dust and leave a film of wax behind.  Apply it with a damp cloth, rub gently and then wipe off.

Kitchen tools

when a kitchen is redecorated, it is a quite a simple matter to change the colours of the handles of kitchen tools so that they match the new colour scheme.  Wash the handles first in synthetic detergent to remove any grease, allow to dry and then rub lightly with fine glass paper to remove gloss.  A strong heat resisting enamel is the best choice for kitchen tools and this is easy to apply and will dry quickly.  Let the tools dry thoroughly before using them and avoid very hot strong detergent until the enamel is well hardened.

Dust bin

Sprinkle the dust bin with a disinfectant powder daily to deter flies and decay; or, if this is not available, try sprinkling the dustbin with powdered borax instead, it is effective even in hot weather. During warm weather, paint the inside of the dust bin lid with creosol.  This will keep the dust bin clean and deter flies and blue bottles from hovering around. A deodorant block, specially made to be stuck to the inside of the dustbin lid, can be used to prevent unpleasant odours.  It should be, replaced when it has finally worn away. Another way to freshening a dustbin is to burn a sheet of news paper in it once or twice a week.
