Grandma’s Kitchen: The Rhythm of the Uukhal-Mussal and the Flavor of Childhood Churma

When I was a kid, summer vacations meant only one thing—heading straight to the village to be spoiled by Grandma. Every single day of those holidays was a masterclass in love and culinary heritage, as Grandma patiently taught me the secrets behind her most amazing recipes.

The Day I Learned the Art of Churma

The picture above captures the very essence of the delicious Churma we made together when I was just 13 years old. It was absolutely divine! I still vividly remember one particular summer when we cooked up a massive storm and made giant batches of this sweet, comforting dish to share with everyone.

The Magic of the Uukhal, Mussal, and Parat

While modern kitchens rely on electric blenders, Grandma’s process was a beautiful, rhythmic ritual. She would bring out her heavy uukhal (stone mortar), the sturdy mussal (wooden pestle), and a massive brass parat (large high-walled platter). Hot, fresh-off-the-tawa rotis were torn into pieces, drenched in golden homemade ghee, and mixed with rich gur (jaggery). Watching her pound it all together with perfect rhythm was pure magic—the aroma alone was enough to make our mouths water.

A Feast of Traditional Delicacies

Throughout the course of that unforgettable week, Grandma truly cooked up a storm. Between our cooking lessons, we also sat together and spun massive amounts of punnies (cotton rolls for spinning thread). It was a beautiful blend of traditional chores and endless feasting. Over those few days, she taught us how to make churma, kasar, crisp suhaallies, rich khir, fluffy gulgule, and sweet maal puraas. We ate like royalty!

Years have passed, but the echoes of the heavy mussal hitting the mortar and the rich aroma of melting ghee still take me straight back to her warm village kitchen. Grandma didn't just teach me how to cook; she handed down a piece of our culture wrapped in unconditional love.

raditional attire making competitions

Welcome! If you are not familiar with what’s happening here, you’re in for quite a treat.

Sonia, Ritu, Shashi, Bhandari and myself with several unfamiliar faces are taking part in a traditional attire making competitions. And we want all of you to join in the competition!

So, for my first traditional dress project, I will use this fabric I found from Kalekhan’s (Hisar)  shop (very famous shop of the city). I bought it not knowing what I would make with it.

इस दिल्ली महानगर में हिंदी कविता को चाहने वाले लोगों की कमी नहीं है, समय- समय पर कविता के दीवाने किसी मंच के तहत इक्कठे होते हैं और समरसता के आलम में अपनी अपनी कविताओं को साँझा करते हैं.कविता के इन मुरीदों को 'डाईलोग' एक सार्थक मंच मुहैया करवाता है. आज २८ जुलाई को इसी मंच की मासिक काव्य गोष्ठी सम्पन्न हुई. इस गोष्ठी का सञ्चालन मिथिलेश श्रीवास्तव जी ने किया. कार्यक्रम में 'विवेक मिश्र' जैसे नामी कथाकार व कवि, 'लक्ष्मी शंकर' जैसे वरिष्ट कवि व वक्ता, प्रमोद कुमार तिवारी जैसे मिट्टी से जुड़े रचना कर्मी और ममता किरण जैसी लब्धप्रतिष्ठित कवयित्री ने साँझ के इस सुहावने समां को कविताओं से सराबोर कर दिया.गौरतलब है कि अजीत कौर द्वारा स्थापित अकादेमी ऑफ़ फ़ाईन आर्ट्स के कार्यक्रम 'डाईलोग' को ३१ अक्टूबर, वर्ष 2010 से सँभालने की जिम्मेदारी कवि मिथिलेश जी ने ली और तब से ही कविता की यह महफिल कवि और श्रोताओं के बीच पैठ बनाने लगी और कुछ ही समय में इस कार्यक्रम की शोहरत दिल्ली महानगर से बाहर भी पहुँचने पहुँची. अकादेमी के मयुजिय्म हाल में महीने के आखिरी शनिवार को आयोजित इस गोष्ठी के गरिमा को युवा और नामी गरामी कलमकार शामिल होते हैं................ for the rest click HERE

Lunch bag tote........

With Up cycled yarn...........

Wow! I’m so impressed with the sturdy strap I’ve made for my daughter’s lunchbox bag.

What a pretty crochet fabric belt! I didn’t realize it would be so…pretty! I mean, as nice as it is in the picture, it’s so much better in person. Lovely shiny /sparkly, sooooo bright and cheerful. I may start sneaking it the very spark into my design without any design! Sorry that sparks are not visible in picks.

I’ve finished the container and the strap. Still to do: that container/box needs a roof with some sort of opening so Tiffin can be pulled in and out. I’m thinking a string flap.
It was really pretty monotonous after all for the big, Tiffin with hot case. I actually put in the panel little ‘windows’ because I was soooooo bored making flat fabric. I quite like the effect, though. So good for me. It was a lot of crocheting, though – what I have done was done in several days (on and off), with the majority of the actual stitching done in one day. My poor wrist. But I will proceed for the Delhi tour just day after, so I must press on!


Here , as you can see, I’ve finished the bottom and sides and strap too……for f the Box– most of the major work, hopefully. Still to do – The Box needs a roof and some embellishments. Once I’m finished, I’ll post the pattern for the lunch box so you can all make one, too!

The Lunch Box is done! And not a day too soon, either…finished to widespread admiration, the Lunch Box is of sufficient size to accommodate  the three containers ofstain-less steel with outer hot case.woh!

पुराने कपड़े से नया अंदाज़ और पुराने बैग का खूबसूरत रूपांतरण

कुछ कपड़े ऐसे होते हैं जिन्हें खरीदते समय ही मन में होता है कि इन्हें बहुत संभालकर और कुछ अलग अंदाज़ में इस्तेमाल करना है। मेरे पास भी ऐसा ही एक कपड़ा था—रेमंड शूटिंग का महँगा कपड़ा, जिसे मैंने बहुत सोच-समझकर खरीदा था।

मैं चाहती थी कि इससे ऐसा सूट तैयार हो जिसे केवल सर्दियों में ही नहीं, बल्कि मौसम के अनुसार गर्मियों में भी पहना जा सके। इस सिलाई का किस्सा फिर कभी किसी अलग पोस्ट में विस्तार से बताऊँगी।

पुराने बैग को दिया नया रूप

सूट तो तैयार हो गया, लेकिन अब बारी थी उसके साथ मैचिंग पर्स की।

मेरे पास लिबर्टी का एक अच्छा लेदर बैग था, लेकिन वह काफी पुराना हो चुका था। उसे फेंकने का मन बिल्कुल नहीं हुआ। मैंने सोचा—क्यों न इसे भी एक नया जीवन दिया जाए?

बस, फिर क्या था!

पुराने लेदर बैग को नया रूप देने की शुरुआत।

पुराने बैग को खोलकर उसके उपयोगी हिस्सों को अलग किया गया।

मैंने पुराने बैग को सावधानी से उधेड़ा और उसके उपयोगी हिस्सों को अलग किया। इसके बाद उसी सलवार के कपड़े को बैग के ऊपर मढ़कर उसे नया रूप दिया।

और देखते ही देखते मेरा पुराना बैग एक बिल्कुल नए, खूबसूरत मैचिंग पर्स में बदल गया!

छोटा-सा बदलाव, बिल्कुल नया अंदाज़

पर्स को देखकर कई लोगों ने मुझसे पूछा कि ऐसा मैचिंग पर्स उन्हें कहाँ मिलेगा। उन्हें यह देखकर आश्चर्य होता था कि सूट और पर्स एक ही कपड़े से बने हुए हैं।

मैं मुस्कुराकर कहती हूँ—

“ऐसा सूट और मैचिंग पर्स बाजार में ढूँढ़ने के बजाय थोड़ा-सा समय और मेहनत लगाइए, फिर अपनी पसंद का डिज़ाइन खुद तैयार कीजिए।”

मेरे लिए पुराने सामान को नया रूप देना केवल बचत का तरीका नहीं है। इसमें अपनी पसंद, रचनात्मकता और थोड़ी-सी मेहनत जोड़कर किसी पुरानी चीज़ को फिर से उपयोगी और सुंदर बना देना मुझे हमेशा अच्छा लगता है।

इस तरह एक महँगे कपड़े से बना मेरा सूट और पुराने लेदर बैग से तैयार हुआ यह मैचिंग पर्स—दोनों मेरे लिए एक छोटे-से creative experiment और upcycling project की तरह बन गए।

अगर आपके पास भी कोई पुराना बैग, कपड़ा या ऐसी चीज़ है जिसे देखकर लगता है कि इसे फेंकना नहीं चाहिए, तो उसे एक बार नए नज़रिए से देखिए। हो सकता है उसमें किसी नए रूप की शुरुआत छिपी हो।

लाजवाब रोटियाँ/चपातीयाँ

मेरी एक सहेली ने बताया कि जब वह् अमेरिका में थी तो उसने अपनी एक अमेरिकन दोस्त को खाने पर बुलाया और शुद्ध हरियानवी खाना खिलाया. वह् अमेरिकन हैरान! उसने बाजरे की रोटी ताजा मक्खन के साथ, खेलरों का साग, लहसुन की चटनी और लस्सी....उसे लगा कि यह क्या? वह् कई हिंदुस्तानियों के यहाँ खाने पर गई है और उसने सभी के घरों में अलग-अलग खाना पाया!

बहर- हाल हिंदुस्तान के अलग-अलग राज्यों के अलग-अलग खानों की बात तो छोड़िये ......

मैंने हरियाणा के अपने गाँवों तक में अलग-अलग किस्म की रोटियाँ खाई हैं उदाहरण के तौर पर मेरा गांव जो   भिवानी  जिले में पड़ता है वहां वर्ष के अधिकतर महीनों में बाजरे की रोटियाँ खाई जाती थीं, और गर्मियों में गेहूँ और चने की मिस्सी रोटियाँ. अकाल के दिनों में  जौ  की रोटियाँ बनती थीं  जौ  का छिलका उतार कर उसे पिसवा लिया जाता था. छिलका उतारे हुए जौ को  घाट कहते हैं उसकी रोटियाँ भी हम बहुत खाते थे. 

मक्की, जौ, ज्वार, बाजरा, चने,  गेहूँ,  और सोयाबीन
 का आटा 

मेरे ननिहाल में जोकि हांसी तहसील  में पड़ता है ज्यादतार गेहूँ की रोटियाँ ही बनती थीं. मेरी माँ के ननिहाल (जो कि टोहाना तहसील में पड़ता है) में जहाँ कि हम बचपन में बहुत जाया करते थे मक्की की रोटियाँ बनती थीं.

जब मेरी शादी हुईवह गांव हिसार  जिले में है तब मेरी सास- माँ बताती थी कि वहां पर पहले हमेशा ज्वार की ही रोटियाँ बनती थी.

मेरे पिताजी को  मोठ (मोठ हमारे बारानी गांव में खूब होता था)  की रोटियाँ बहुत अच्छी लगती थीं ....सो जब हम आगरा में रहते थे तब हमारे घर  मोठ  की रोटियाँ बनती थीं. हमारे बारानी गांव में चने बहुत  होते थे तो यदा -कदा खालिस चने की रोटियाँ भी हमारे यहाँ बन जाती थी जो मुझे लहसुन की चटनी के साथ अब भी खानी बहुत अच्छी लगती है. 

मक्की,बाजरा,चने,  ज्वार,जौ,  सोयाबीन और बीच में   गेहूँ 

तो फिर पूरे  हिंदुस्तान की तो बात ही क्या कहें जब अकेले हरियाणा में ही महज थोड़ी-थोड़ी दूरी पर ही खाने -पीने में इतनी भिन्नता है.

अब मैं  अपने घर की बात कहूँ तो.............मैं अपने आटे में सोयाबिन और चना गेहूँ के साथ तो हमेशा ही मिलाती थी ..परन्तु पिछले कुछ वर्षों से यह सात किस्म का अनाज पिसवा कर आटा  बनाती हूँ और मैं यह सभी अनाज अलग-अलग पिसवाती हूँ  ताकि कभी-कभी मक्की, जौ, ज्वार, बाजरा, चने अथवा खालिस गेहूँ की रोटियाँ बनाई जा सकें सबका स्वाद अलग होता है और वह् खाने में अच्छी लगती हैं. आमतौर पर मैं सभी किस्म के आटे मिला कर ही रोटियाँ बनाती हूँ..

Indoor plants or plants in the interior of the room can be used to make the room more natural and fresh. You may consider putting plants in one room in your home. The green color of plants can feast their eyes so the room becomes more alive. By choosing appropriate crops and the addition of other complementary, your room can be more beautiful.

Indoor plants generally are plants that can live with limited sunlight. In fact, there is a plant that its leaves are more glossy color if placed in the room. Plants that can be selected is Aglaonema constatum or aglaonema siam aurora, various species of palm, sanseviera, dracena sanderiana, philodendron, sphatiphyllum.

Plants are placed in the room also serves as an anti-pollutant, meaning that these plants can eliminate air pollution or toxic gases that are in the room by the way sucked then replace it with fresh air. This is very useful, because the pollutants do not only come from the factory fumes or smoke coming from the room, but also can come from such indoor pollutants from cleaning materials, smoke cigarettes, furniture, paint, glue, and others. The impact of the pollutant is that it can cause illnesses such as strep throat, mouth irritation glands, respiratory problems, headaches, skin allergies, eye, and even can lead to liver cancer.
