From Ground Reporting to Accountability: The Power of Independent Journalism

In Haryana, there is a very apt and insightful local proverb: "Charon Kani Tan Boccha Band Kar Diya" (चारों कानीं तैं बोच्चा बंद कर दिया). In simple terms, it means "closing every single door or exit so that there is no way out." When an ordinary citizen gets trapped in an administrative maze or a complex web of rules where no one listens, this saying perfectly describes their situation.

We recently witnessed candidates or voters whose names had been removed from the electoral roll approach the country's highest court—the Honorable Supreme Court—seeking justice. The Honorable Court clearly ordered that their names be reinstated immediately. However, our administrative setup was structured in such a way that despite the court’s order and countless efforts, their names could not be added. Instead, the government and administrative machinery simply informed them that they had been issued 'Form 6'—meaning they would now have to register as brand-new voters! Just think about it: if an 80-year-old citizen is made to apply as a new voter, all their lifelong identity and logical records on paper get completely turned upside down. In such a situation, an ordinary person feels as if the system has blocked every exit and is saying, "Do whatever you want, we will rule as we please."

As mainstream media loses focus on real issues today, independent digital platforms like 'The Red Mike' are making a huge difference. Amidst this helplessness and situations like Goa, a significant change occurred when the YouTube channel 'The Red Mike' and journalist Saurabh Shukla delivered ground-level reporting through their series 'Delhi Deleted'.

In Delhi, nearly 33 lakh people were issued notices regarding 'Logical Discrepancies'. As a result, ordinary citizens—especially daily wage earners and underprivileged families—were forced to leave their work and livelihood behind to stand in long queues outside official ERO offices.

Following persistent coverage by 'The Red Mike', the Election Commission was forced to step in and make procedures easier for the public, and the administration has taken major steps to facilitate voters in Delhi. Under this initiative, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will now visit voters' doorsteps directly to collect and upload necessary documents. This move will free citizens from the hassle of visiting ERO offices or standing in long queues.

As part of these reforms, the deadline for filing claims and objections in Delhi has been extended to October 30. Additionally, to make the system more inclusive, extra measures have been introduced, including special camps for homeless individuals, dedicated help desks, and options for online hearings if required.

Ultimately, it is clear that ground reporting by 'The Red Mike' is exactly what forces the system to answer to the public. Yet, looking at the Goa incident and that Haryanvi proverb—"Charon Kani Tan Boccha Band Kar Diya"—leaves a lingering ache in the heart. Why must a citizen of a free nation run from pillar to post just to claim their basic rights? Why are our rules and procedures so tangled up? It leaves us with a critical question: is our democracy truly as accessible to the common man as it ought to be?

A beautiful walk down memory lane! Today I am sharing these golden moments captured on 24th December 2017. Time flies, but these special moments with nature and my little princess remain etched in my heart.

Today was truly a special and beautiful day, surrounded by the enchanting colors of nature and filled with moments of absolute joy. Spending time outdoors amongst vibrant flowers and fresh greenery always brings a deep sense of peace, but today was made even more memorable because of my little princess.

Watching her play, laugh, and explore the wonders of nature was a heartwarming experience. Her innocent curious eyes and soft laughter added a whole new magic to the blossoms around us. Every flower seemed to bloom a little brighter, and every breeze felt a little sweeter in her presence.

To capture these unforgettable moments of happiness, love, and togetherness, I took a few photographs. Sharing these pictures of our special day with all of you!

2. शब्दों से परे: जब एक पुरानी तस्वीर में आज का सच दिखने लगे!

 

अक्टूबर 2012 की बात है, कुछ पढ़ते हुए मेरे सामने 'Juxtaposition' शब्द आ गया और फिर मैं उसके असली मीनिंग को ढूंढने की गहराई में चली गई थी. उस खोज के दौरान ही मेरे सामने लेबनान की यह विचारोत्तेजक तस्वीर आई थी, जिसमें फोटोजर्नलिस्ट स्टीव मैकरी ने एक टैंक पर खेलते बच्चों को कैद किया था. यह तस्वीर इस शब्द का एक बेहद शक्तिशाली और दर्दनाक उदाहरण थी, जहाँ युद्ध के एक क्रूर साधन और बचपन की मासूमियत को एक साथ रखकर दुनिया के सामने वहाँ के विरोधाभास को लाया गया था. 1982 के उस दौर में लेबनान एक भयानक गृहयुद्ध और इज़राइल के सैन्य आक्रमण से जूझ रहा था, जहाँ बच्चों के खेल के मैदान भी युद्ध के साए से अछूते नहीं थे.

From Victorian London’s 'Oliver Twist' to 21st-Century 'Mohammad Irfan': The Changing Contours of Slum Narrative, Ground Reality, and Digital Resistance

In 19th-century Victorian London, Charles Dickens used 'Oliver Twist' to show the world that inner purity could survive the horrors of extreme poverty. Yet, 58 years later, Arthur Morrison’s brutal realist masterpiece 'A Child of the Jago' exposed a darker, more suffocating truth—that the slum is a systemic trap from which escape for a child is virtually impossible.

For centuries, literature and history viewed the marginalized through these two lenses: either as helpless victims keeping their morality intact or as tragic casualties crushed by an unyielding system.

Even in modern academic discourse, subaltern studies have often carried a heavy tone of pessimism. In her groundbreaking postcolonial essay, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak famously asked, "Can the Subaltern Speak?"—concluding with a resounding skepticism that the elite system would always silence or distort the voice of the oppressed. Similarly, while historian Ranajit Guha championed 'History from Below', elite narratives traditionally assumed that the uneducated masses lacked the capacity to grasp complex, modern constitutional and state machinery on their own.

But the meteoric digital rise of Mohammad Irfan at Delhi's Jantar Mantar completely shatters and disproves this intellectual pessimism.

Unlike Morrison’s tragic protagonist, Dicky Perrott, who succumbed to the structural violence of the Jago, today’s subaltern youth refuses to die in silence. And unlike Spivak’s theory of a muted subaltern waiting for an elite intermediary to represent them, Irfan has seized his own microphone.

Armed with no formal education but powered by the democratic reach of Internet Voice Search, Irfan bypassed institutional barriers. He decoded the complexities of the Indian Constitution and labor rights entirely on his own terms. When he fiercely proclaims, "Mere survival or just getting food is not what life is about," he isn't just speaking; he is establishing a new paradigm of autonomous political agency. He has proven both Spivak and Guha's limitations wrong by directly challenging the state.

This evolution marks a monumental sociological shift: the modern slum culture is no longer a symbol of mute helplessness or passive suffering. Fuelled by decentralized digital tools, it has transformed into a dynamic epicenter of political consciousness, active resistance, and organic self-assertion.

The subaltern can speak, the subaltern is speaking, and they have grabbed the digital megaphone to write their own history from below!

Organizer! (Upcycling Idea)

 Do you have an old, faded insulated hot case (casserole) sitting in your kitchen cabinet? Before you think about throwing it away, wait! Today, we will show you how to turn everyday household waste into a beautiful, rustic, and trendy storage organizer box.

This project is completely eco-friendly and budget-friendly! Let’s dive into the step-by-step transformation.

The Inspiration

Kitchen casseroles often lose their shine or heat-retaining capacity over time. However, their sturdy plastic base and perfectly fitting lids make them an excellent canvas for crafting. For this project, we took a discarded burlap sack (jute bag), unraveled its twine, and used a crochet hook to give the old container a brand-new, stylish life!

Materials Needed

·         An old insulated hot case (with lid)

·         Jute twine unraveled from an old sack

·         Crochet hook

·         Shiny blue beads for decoration

·         Glue gun or adhesive

The Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Prep the Hot Case

Wash and dry your old hot case thoroughly before starting.

Step 2: Unravel the Sack Twine

Take an old jute sack and gently pull out the threads. This gives you strong, rustic jute yarn completely for free!

Step 3: Crochet the Outer Cover

Using your crochet hook, create a round base that fits the bottom of the hot case. Keep crocheting upward without increasing stitches until the entire body is neatly covered. Follow the same method to crochet a cover for the lid.

Step 4: Add the Beads and Knob

While crocheting the middle row, thread your vibrant blue beads into the yarn. This adds a stunning contrast against the neutral brown jute. Don't forget to crochet a small loop or knob at the top of the lid for easy opening!

Step 5: The Inside Lining

To give the box a neat finish, cut square pieces of the remaining burlap fabric and glue them inside the box and under the lid. This completely hides the old plastic surface.
