Every time I shop for my yarn, I blogged about my stash. You know, those lovely bits of yarn sitting around waiting to be crafted into a bag, a shawl, a little girl's dress. So, when I was recently asked what yarn I preferred if I could crochet only with one brand of yarn for the rest of the year, I thought, damn, that's a tough one. I don't know if I can limit myself to only one yarn.

 

Take for instance, cotton. Beautiful mercerized cotton possessing a depth of color and silky softness. My personal favorite? Spun  by my g-maa.

I'm just now starting to work with wool. Several years ago, I had made a few hats and scarves with that old standby Vardhman Wool. Nice yarn but it was just so boring. I also tended to stay away from wool because several pieces were inadvertently felted. Color me stupid in that it wasn't until 2008 that I realized that superwash woolen existed. I've added sock weight wool and wool blend yarns to my stash. My favorite:  vardhmaan and  Yarn, a first hand(sheered by our neighbor at village and spun by my grandma, and dyed by local Muslim dyer named munsi)  wool yarn with beautiful colors.

 

Eco-friendly yarns like bamboo and linen, and blends such as bamboo-wool, wool-cotton, cotton-acrylic tend to be my "go to" yarns and can quite readily be adapted for most projects. I do not have an aversion to acrylic if it is a good acrylic, like vardhman and oswal yarn, whose versatility makes this a good choice for a one-yarn stash from which to make shawls, scarves, sweaters, bags, etc.

But life is not about standbys and making do. At least not everyday. I want to grow with my craft, so, if I have to choose a single yarn to fuel my crochet habit, then it would have to be Boraco Comfort. It's soft, economical, versatile, and available in a number of colors. Now, if I could choose (and afford) a single brand of yarn, it would be the entire line of handmade yarn by my g-maa Yarns.

I bought ....Painted Terra cota clay pots

 

A small square basket . I thought the pattern was beautiful. i use it to hold tot bits of the almirah. while purchasing i had in mind that i will keep my phone and charger etc in it, so they will be  always at the same place and I don’t have to look for...but have a look. I really heart its two small handles.

I had these basic terracotta clay pots for flowers. I’m not really into orange so I decided to paint them.
I hand  painted the insides and the outsides with the same paint  I used in my floating vase
I think it looks pretty nice. the scarfs on the necks muted with a pop of colour.
I've used them for a while now, hence the  dusty looks.
A very fast and easy project.

MY Kitchen cabinet-cheer ups my soul

This sight awaited me when I got up to make myself a cheer-yourself-up cuppa. The inside of my look into my niche cabinet! The looks of glass aren’t quite captured right with my mobile camera. So let's take a closer look.

On the bottom shelf there are some Colorful mugs, white cups in hotel ware, some white china eggcups, on the second shelf some glass ice-cream cups, and the glass milk jugs and bowls vine glasses, cold drink glasses were bought from  Delhi. The colorful mugs were also bought from  Delhi’s, LajpatNagar central market.
On the left in the third shelf here are  lovely cold drink glasses (sadly not the full sets of six each. Perhaps I should bring the missed ones to complete the set?) from the Kitchen Galary in Hisar itself, my some tea glasses and mugs on the right. The upper shelf is divided in three. On right my lovely vintage teapot from Lajpat Nagar , Delhi again. In the middle the Nescafe printed red mugs free with Nescafe packet from Military Canteen here and white coffee mugs..i love white plain crockery and hotel ware.  On the left the glasses from a little shop near my daughter’s flat in  Delhi,and the two were free with some tea boxes or  other beverage Bourn vita or complain. There are several beautiful mugs and glasses free with the purchases…..so cute that I had to purchase another packet without any need just to complete the set or for a pair. Isn’t’ it to befool the consumers for purchase more ore encourage consumers for impulsive buying?????? 
I've also just see some ladies in their gala dress for a boy’s birth celebrations on the handpump.  A lady in a Haryanvi traditional dress walking between the crowed with a pot of water on her head.thw scene also cheers me immensely, though I wish it were me in the traditional Dresses
of Haryana ..i love traditional dresses of all the states of India. I surely will gift my daughter Traditional Dresses of each state of India….of course on her marriage…..right.

So anyway, that sight has cheered me right up! I think it could do with some oil cloth to line the shelves. Perhaps the map table cloth I bought in Bus will do better? Yes. The map’s loveliness ensues.

Paisley in my house...........

I spent ages looking around for Paisley  inspiration for a cushion cover I was making to paint with fabric colors.

 

I was on a mission to shop for my fabric stash since long. I am still working on the mission….one day I noticed that most of the fabrics I bought contained paisleys…not only that I noticed that there are lots of paisley designs on my bed sheets/ cushions/shawls/ even on greeting cards contained paisley design on them. Today, I thought I’d  take a little look at paisley—it’s an Indian design named for Scottish town. Stay tuned a little later for my paisley round-up!

Paisley Inspired by Nature

There are many theories as to the genesis of the paisley pattern. One theory is that it originated in ancient Babylon and took its inspiration from the growing shoot of the date palm. For ancient Babylonians, the date palm represented the tree of life – the palm was the source of their food, wine, thatch, wood, paper and string and represented prosperity and plenty. The motif spread from Babylon to India where it was incorporated into all types of design.

The East India Company had the monopoly on delivering luxury goods to Britain from the East. The Kashmir shawl, so highly prized that it was often the gift of choice for nobility, was quickly appreciated  by officers in the East India Company. So taken with the quality of the wool (cashmere), those officers began to bring a few shawls back to Britain as gifts. The Kashmir shawl quickly became all the rage. The shawl became firmly cemented as a fashionable item when Empress Josephine in France began wearing them as a compliment to her “antique style” of dress. Josephine was said to have owned hundreds of shawls. Everyone wanted one of these rare Kashmir shawls but at Rs 10000-25000 it was certainly not something everyone could afford.

British textile manufactures seized the opportunity to reproduce these Kashmir shawls. The real hurdle was in creating a shawl that had the same feel as Kashmir. The Himalayan goat produced an underfleece to protect it from the intense cold – this under fleece (known as pashmina) was shed every summer and would be collected from rocks and bushes. The higher in the mountain, the better quality the fleece would be. To supplement this limited supply, domesticated goats were also raised for their fleece but even these goats produced only two pounds of down each year (which could be used to weave one 4 foot by 6 inch shawl). The earliest British imitations were priced at £20 and were made mainly of silk.

The day is still young, but I already feel so much better having worked with Chameli   (Yes this is named as Jasmine too) , who enticed me with his scent to play....for Jasmine is known to be the King of Flowers.
