A Glimpse of Rural Life, Women’s Work and Traditional Fuel Storage

During one of our village visits for a field survey, we came across this simple yet interesting structure on the outskirts of Village Kurri, Aryanagar.

At first glance, it may look like nothing more than a mound of cow dung. But for the rural household, such a structure—traditionally known as a Bitoda—had an important practical purpose.

Cow dung was not merely waste in rural life. It was carefully collected, shaped into dung cakes and dried in the sun. Once dry, these cakes were stored in such mounds or storage units and later used as fuel for cooking.

During a field visit to Village Kurri, Aryanagar — interacting with rural women and documenting their everyday lives.

Fieldwork is not only about questionnaires and data. It is also about observing the small details of everyday life—how people live, work, store their resources, care for their animals and make use of what nature provides.

The Bitoda – An Old Rural Practice

In villages, every part of the household's resources had its use. Cattle provided milk, while their dung became an important source of fuel and was also used in other traditional household and agricultural practices.

The making and storing of dung cakes was largely associated with women’s daily work. Collecting dung, mixing and shaping it, drying the cakes and finally storing them required considerable time and effort.

What appears to be a simple mound therefore tells us a much larger story about women's labour, traditional energy sources and the resourcefulness of rural households.

A Moment from Our Field Visit

I remember seeing this Bitoda during one of our visits to the village for our survey. It was around 11:00 in the morning when we reached the village.

The surroundings were full of ordinary rural activity. Women were busy with their daily work, and a cart could be seen moving towards the fields.

These seemingly ordinary scenes often become the most memorable part of fieldwork. When we go to a village for research, we may begin with questionnaires, schedules and data collection, but along the way we also encounter the everyday life of the people—their work, their homes, their animals, their fields and their traditional ways of managing resources.

This little Bitoda was one such glimpse into that world.

More Than Just a Photograph

Today, when many traditional practices are disappearing or changing, photographs like these become small records of a rural way of life.

The Bitoda reminds us of a time when rural households depended much more on locally available resources and made use of almost everything they had.

For me, this photograph is not simply a picture of a cow-dung mound. It is a memory of village life, fieldwork and the often-unnoticed labour of rural women.

Sometimes, the most ordinary things tell the most meaningful stories.

विपिन चौधरी ..My daughter posed in Sari dress On Diwali ............when she was with us at home for the festival!

1.आदिवासी औरत और पेप्सी

बाज़ार की चमचमाती आंखे

सड़क पर चलते हाथों में सिमटी

दमड़ी को टटोल रही हैं

समाज की आंखे इंसान की

पीठ पर नज़र गड़ा कर

उसका लहू पीने की तैयारी में हैं

तभी एक आदिवासी औरत के हाथ में पेप्सी देख

समाज का चेहरा कठोर हो

तन जाता है

अपनी सूजी हुई आँखों से

समाज देख रहा है

आदिवासी महिला का काला-कलूटा रंग

खनिज की प्रकृति से मेल खाता हुआ उसका

दरदर्राया हुआ कठोर और नुकीला चेहरा

समाज को आदिवासी औरत के

आदि पन से परेशानी नहीं है

परहेज़ है तो

माथे तक सिन्दूर पोते

चटक लाल सस्ती साड़ी पहने

छम-छम करती मेट्रो में चढ़ आई

आदिवासी महिला के हाथ में पकड़ी हुई

उस ‘चिल्लड पेप्सी’ से

इस बीच आदिवासी महिला

समाज की नजरों की ठीक सिधाई में बैठ

बिना साँस लिए पूरी की पूरी

पेप्सी उतार लेती है

अपने हलक के नीचें

यह देख समाज का गला अचानक से सूखने लगता है

2. शरीर की भीतरी दशा

मरने से पहले जिन्दा रहना जरूरी है

लेकिन जीनें का एक बहाना तो शिराओं में बहते रक्त

के पास है

जो एकबारगी

भीतर के एक उन्नत रास्ते को देख थम गया है

लाल रक्त की कोशिकाएं धीरे-धीरे

एक मृत ढेर में तब्दील हो रही हैं

गुदा, लहू साफ़ करने के अपने पाक धर्म से

विचलित सी जान पड़ रही है

बाहर की व्यवस्था पर मैं अपना पाँव रख कर खड़ी हूँ

पर भीतर की व्यवस्था मुझसे बगावत करने को बेतरह आतुर है

आंखे सही अक्स उतारने में आना-कानी कर रही हैं

एक औंस रक्त साफ़ करने में

ह्रदय को पसीना आने लगा है

दिमाग को भेजे गए सन्देश

अपना परम्परागत रास्ता भटक चुके हैं

सांस, एक कराह के साथ बाहर का रास्ता खोज रही है

पशोपेश में हूं कि

पहले तन साथ छोडेगा या मन

तन पहले चला जाये तो ठीक

मन के बिना एक पल की गुज़र बेमानी है



३. नजरबंद तस्वीर

(सरबजीत के लिये)

सभी चौराहे की गोल दीवार पर चिपकी एक तस्वीर

हर नुक्कड़ हर मोड़ पर आपका पीछा करती तस्वीर

हुकुमरानों की कुर्सी के चारों पायों ने नीचें दबी

हुई वही तस्वीर

आप कितने ही जरूरी काम में व्यस्त हों

यह तस्वीर आपके आगे कर दी जाती है

और आप लाख बहाने कर आगे निकल जाते हैं

इस तस्वीर में कैद

नज़रबंद चेहरे की उम्र एक मोड पर आ ठहर गयी है

तस्वीर के बाहर

इस तन्दरुस्त चेहरे की साँझ कहीं पहले ढल चुकी है

अब तो इस तस्वीर वाला शख्स

बिना सहारे के एक कदम भी नहीं चल सकता

अच्छे बुरे का माप तौल हमने

उस दिन से छोड दिया जब हमारे ही कारिंदे

अपने साथियों के खिलाफ गुटबाजी में लिप्त पाए गए

और हुकुमरानो ने सह्रदयता दिखाते हुए उन्हें माफ कर दिया

पर इस तस्वीर के

पक्ष में उठी माफ़ीनामें की आवाजों को

बेशकीमती कालीन के नीचें छुपा दिया गया

सरहद की मजबूती के आगे

नतमस्तक हैं

दोनों ओर की फौजें

और इस तस्वीर के आगे बेबस हैं

चारों सेनाएं और दो लाजवाब देश

लोकतंत्र में सरकार की मजबूती

इस तस्वीर की मार्फ़त

अच्छी तरह से देख ली हैं

आगे से हम

इस सरकार की तरफ पीठ करके सोने वाले हैं



4.चन्द्रो

(स्तन कैंसर से जूझती महिलाओं को समर्पित)

चन्द्रो

यानी फलाने की बहु और

धिम्काने की पत्नी

पहली बार तुम्हें चाचा के हाथ में पकड़ी एक तस्वीर में देखा

सुराही सी गर्दन पर चमेली के फूल सी तुम्हारी सूरत



फिर देखी

श्रम के मजबूत सांचे में ढली तुम्हारी तंदरुस्त आकृति

कुए से पानी लाती

खड़ी दोपहर में खेतों से बाड़ी चुगती

तीस किलों की भरोटी को सिर पर धरे लौटती अपनी दहलीज़

ढोर-डंगरों के लिए सुबह-शाम हारे में चाट रांधने में जुटी

किसी भी लोच से तत्काल इंकार करती तुम्हारी देह



इसी खूबसूरती ने तुम्हें अकारण ही गांव की दिलफेंक बहु बनाया

फाग में अपने जवान देवरों को उचक-उचक कोडे मारती तुम

तो गाँव की सूख चली बूढ़ी चौपाल

हरी हो लहलहा उठती

गांव के पुरुष स्वांग सा मीठा आनंद लेते

और स्त्रियाँ पल्लू मुहँ में दबा भौचक हो तुम्हारी चपलता को एकटक देखती



अफवाओं के पंख कुछ ज्यादा ही चोडे हुआ करते हैं

अफवाहें तुम्हे देख

आहें भर बार- बार दोहराती

फलाने की दिलफेंक बहु

धिम्काने की दिलफेंक स्त्री

इस बार युवा अफवाह ने सच का चेहरा चिपका

एक बुरी खबर दी

कि तुम अपना एक स्तन

कैंसर की चपेट में गँवा कर

लौटी हो डॉक्टर की हजारों सलाहों के साथ

शहर से गाँव

उसी पहले से रूप में

उसी ताप में

इस काली खबर से गाँव के पुरूषों पर क्या बीती

यह ठीक-ठीक मालुम तो नहीं

पर उनके भीतर एक सुखा पोखर तो अपना आकार ले ही गया होगा

गाँव की महिलाओं पर हमेशा के तरह इस खबर का असर भी

फुसफुसाहट के रूप में बहार निकला

चन्द्रो हारी-बीमारी में भी

अपने कामचोर पति के हिस्से की मेहनत कर

डटी रही चौमासे की सीली रातों में

अपने दोनो बच्चों को छाती से सटाए



निकल आती है

आज भी आज भी बुढी चन्द्रो

आधी रात को टोर्च ले

आठ एकड़ खेतों की रखवाली के खातिर

अमावस्या के लकडबग्घे से जंगली अँधेरे में

Flowers with crochet

I think I’ve posted these flowers in the basket and mentioned before how much I love crochet. I taught myself, and I’ve loved it as a major source of relaxation. I’ve always loved anything with flowers, so the crochet flowers are an addiction.

The satisfying pleasure about crochet flowers is that once you've followed patterns and made a few, it's very easy to make them up as you go along - especially ones with simple chain petals.

My daughter then demanded a handkerchief with crochet flowers at the corners, which I crocheted while she was a kid….

Let see…when her wish of handkerchief with flowers at the corners will be fulfilled………….

Rather it’s atideous job………….the threadyarn with single crochet is…very…..slow……process……….
