The ripple pattern, Haath Phool,

Materials needed:

yarn

Worsted weight acrylic yarn in desired colors. About 12 ounces each of 3 different colors (36 ounces total) will make a 40 inch by 60 inch afghan (the ideal size for Project Linus). I made a 40 inch by 60 inch afghan using 10 three ounce skeins of variegated yarn.

or

Sport or baby sport yarn. I made a 42 inch by 39 inch afghan with about 21 ounces of baby sport yarn.

crochet hook

Crochet hook size I for worsted weight yarn

Crochet hook size G for sport weight/3-ply yarn

(Increase or decrease your hook size if you crochet tightly or loosely.)

Gauge:

worsted wt. yarn

sport yarn

8 rows = 5 inches

8 rows = 4 inches

1 pattern repeat is 5 inches wide

1 pattern repeat is 3.75 inches wide

Special Stitches:

3 st dec: *yo, insert hook through next stitch, yo and pull loop through stitch, yo and pull through first 2 loops on hook; Repeat from * twice. Yo and pull through remaining 4 loops on hook.

2 st dec: *yo, insert hook through next stitch, yo and pull loop through stitch, yo and pull through first 2 loops on hook; Repeat from * once. Yo and pull through remaining 3 loops on hook.

Instructions:

Chain a multiple of 16 stitches plus 2 stitches.

For a 40 inch wide afghan in worsted weight yarn, chain 130.

For a 55 inch wide afghan in worsted weight yarn, chain 178.

For a 41 inch wide afghan in sport weight/3-ply yarn, chain 178.

Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook; dc in next 6 ch, 3 dc in next ch, dc in next 6 ch; *work 3 st dec in next 3 ch, dc in next 6 ch, 3 dc in next ch, dc in next 6 ch; Repeat from * across. End by working 2 st dec in last 2 ch. Ch 2 and turn.

Note: The valleys will probably be shallower than the peaks at this point. Work another row or two and they should even up.

Row 2: Skip first stitch; dc in next 7 dc, 3 dc in next dc, dc in next 6 dc; *work 3 st dec in next 3 stitches, dc in next 6 dc, 3 dc in next dc, dc in next 6 dc; Repeat from * across. End by working 2 st dec in last 2 dc. Ch 2 and turn.

Repeat Row 2 until afghan is desired length changing, colors as desired. If you are using more than one color of yarn, I suggest changing colors every 2 rows.

At end of row, when working the 2 st dec, drop the current color of yarn when you have the last 3 loops left on your hook to finish the stitch. Yarn over with new color of yarn and pull through 3 loops on hook. Ch 2 and turn.

Leave 5 or 6 inch ends of each color of yarn to weave in.

Finishing

Weave all yarn ends in securely.

Variation 1 - Ribbed Ripple:

Begining with Row 2, work all stitches in the back loop only to create a ribbed effect.

Haath Phool which literally means "Hand flower", It consists of a center focal (usually in the shape of a flower) on the center of the palm. This is then connected to the bracelet and to one or more ornamental rings that would go on the fingers. For centuries this ornament has been worn by North Indian, Muslim and Pakistani Brides and is an important part of their 9 piece wedding jewelry set. Haath phools are were also worn by court dancers and courtesans in India. Some say that this was a Persian influence as a lot of these dancers or their predecessors came from the then Persia. Contrary to popular belief that most of these handpieces were made using the Kundan technique and Jadua setting (and was chiefly used in the Mughal period), Haath phools were predominantly made from plain silver in Haryana.  Here in this picture my daughter- in- law is wearing this piece of jewel.

My own Bra Pattern

When I was a kid my mom used to sew her bra herself. Later she sewed a few bra’s for me too….Later on I myself did some modifications over my mom’s bra’s.
Now  I decided to learn more about bra construction and make the basic bra with crochet hook and yarn. I found a great pattern from Kusine.com!

Having crocheted  the cups of my crochet bra, I started to construct my own bra band and straps based on reading various bra sewing tutorials. The best one I found was Lenna’s Sewing. Another excellent resource is The Pattern School.

Calendar for this year, My Inspiration today

Ponderings is the juncture of my personal musings and cyberspace. As a woman of a certain age, I find that I have many things to PONDER, some serious, some beautiful, some inspiring, some practical, and some that make me giggle. Join me on the journey...

While doing Holi    cleaning with my daughters i found this amazing cross stitch jute clander. It was so attractive I really wanted to use it in my decor(is foot rug a decor?! or utility article/! A necessity!!!

New calender for this year  

 I got a shiny new toy over the weekend!

I decided to branch out a little and try a perpetual calendar. In theory, I could use the same template again next year because I don't have to worry about the days of the week--numbers only. This design is good for keeping track of birthdays and other major events (which is what this one is for), but maybe not everyday stuff since you don't have the days to double-check.

As you can see, I stopped at March. Neither of us has used this kind of calendar before, so I'm seeing how it goes before I bust out all 12 months. No need to jump the gun and have to re-do it in three weeks because I get freaked out by seeing less information.

If you slacked like me and still don't have a calendar, it's super easy to make your own version. All I did was print the numbers onto ribons for the days,months and year, andinsert them in places for days,months and year tie them togethereach of them like a loop with really a strong fabric glue.
