simple pleasures

 Today's simple pleasure...

created with fabric braids,
has found a new home
and given me motivation to get some
skeins of organic cotton
rolled into balls.

पहले जब मैं छोटी थी यानी २४-२५ साल की तब कितनी मेहनत कर लिया करती थी किसी एक चीज को बनाने में 'इस वाल हेंगिग को बनाने के लिए छोटे रिंग्स को लाल और हरे धागे से बटनहोल स्टीच से ढका बड़े रिंग पर जाली का कपड़ा चढ़ाया और मुश्किल स्टिचेज की क्रोशिये की तितली बनाई और उसे बड़े फ्रेम के बीचों बिच लगाया. तब बनी यह सुंदर वाल हैंगिंग। 

Earlier, when I was young i.e. 24-25 years old, then I used to work so hard to make anything creative To make this wall hanging', small rings are covered with red and green thread with buttonhole stitch, mesh cloth on the big ring Made a crochet butterfly with complicated stitches using crochet thread and placed it in the center of the large frame on net. Then this beautiful wall hanging was made.all the items except thread are recycled material.

Crochet helps releasing stress..

Haryanvi women are hard worker and are creative as they say. I remember my mother's younger years making sweaters, socks, laces for petticoats and frocks, edgings of each and every chunni/dupatta, table cloths, blouses, bags, made of yarns and threads. In fact she gave my daughter a sling bag made of yarn, crocheted.  I really did realize the importance of these cute stuff because it’s all done unique, Creativity is the number one influencing factor that attracts and is important to women. This is that we keep our hands busy by making designs; you can create your own designs as a gift present. In that way your stress will be relieved. My mother then spends quality time making designs and believes me-she has that long patience in making. She taught me about crocheting (only basics) when I was in Grade 4, she bought a very big ball of yarn to make a dining table cloth. My God! too much yarn to buy , I think it was about 5 pounds. Those designs are simple, as a beginner.

 

This can be very simple; all you have to do is to buy the hook. In other words, crochet means "hook" in India. Hooks can be made of materials such as metals, aluminum or plastic and are commercially manufactured as well as produced by artisans. Crocheting, like knitting consists of pulling loops through other loops, but additionally incorporates wrapping the working material around the hook one or more times. My mother started crochet at Pune, Maharashtra in 50’s. The Marathi women were very fond of crochet there they own very olden/primitive type of crochet hooks that were not ever seen by my mom in Haryana. As per my mom early crochet hooks ranged from primitive bent needles in a cork handle, to expensively crafted silver, brass, steel, ivory and bone hooks set into a variety of handles, some of which were better designed to show off a lady's hands than they were to work with thread.

I usually prefer thread for crochet…………but finding thread or yarn is very difficult these days….during my early days .yes when I was a kid I never ever thought of crocheting with yarn.. India has a tropical monsoon climate, Haryana has a semi-arid and tropical climate..Being   a far away from coasts and close to That Desert, it does not get the full share of the monsoon current. The best season here s during the spring seasons from February to April and August to November..  We usually do not use the thick fuzzy yarn for crocheting as temperate zone. Especially in Hisar city, where I am living, the arid region, here thread is preferred. I really love many different kinds of yarn and thread in the other countries showed on internet, but it’s so hard to find in India.

MY VERY OWN CORNER

It's been a while since I last posted an entry here. This creative person (yes ! I’m creative) has been very busy... with life and with crochet,sewing,and making yarn with fabric scraps in leisure time. A lot of unexpected things happened that had me doing things and planning like crazy. Friends ordered crocheted items when I show them my finished projects . I think I will write a separate blog about this.

Aside from  doing things listed above , photography is also my passion. This week has been a busy one because we had to go to my sis for a week for change. And then, we had an unexpected photo shoot on the way.  When we got home to Hisar, we're scheduled to go to Delhi. So we had to unpack and pack the luggage.   We came back soon and did tiring job of dusting and washing.

yarn,thread,wool

I cannot help myself taking home more yarn. Wish I could have a craft room. My stash is now full of yarn, including some I bought from local store, a lot actually, not to mention to crochet thread! 

My sister   asked me once, "when do you expect you will use up all these yarns?". Honestly I have no idea... Just keep adding to my stash faster than I can use from it. I'm crazy about yarn, am I??? But I'm trying, so much, to attempt to keep it under control. Maybe one of my resolutions next year is "not to buy more yarn"!

HISTORY OF CROCHET

First off I have to say that my favorite crochet is Intarsia (charted) Crochet. I will be getting into this style later on in this series for any experienced crocheters.

Compared with knitting, crochet has a much shorter history, and is thought to have developed from lace-making. The origin is debatable, but research suggest that it became a pastime for high-born ladies in Europe in the 16th century. It was passed on by nuns, who were the main teachers of lace-making at that time.

Crochet was an imitation of lace-making because lace was very expensive and most could not afford it. The word “crochet” comes from the French word for hook.

It evolved from a form a needlework called tambouring, which is a cross between lace-making and crochet. It got its name because it was originally worked in a frame which resembled a tambourine. It looks like chain stitches(used in embroidery) and was used to make decorative flower motifs on muslin and other fabrics.

Once it was discovered that patterns of chain stitches could be made by joining them together without the need for a frame or fabric, lace-making developed into the art we know today as crochet, although at that time is was done with extremely tiny hooks and fine thread (sort of like what you would use to make doilies).

The first publication of crochet patterns was in the 1840′s, crochet became more popular and not only for the wealthy.

Mille Riego de la Branchardiere translated several bobbin  lace and needle lace designs into “Irish” crochet patterns for publication.

Irish Crochet is said to be the finest form of crochet. Exceedingly intricate and complicated patterns are worked with fine thread. Queen Victoria loved this form of crochet so much that she learned how to do it herself.

Diwali cleaning ....

First, it's the cool morning breeze with the hint of jasmine (from my yard) smell through  the window . Then comes the articles in festival specials of newspapers and magazines and, finally, the in-built alarm goes off. Yes, it's time for spring-cleaning. Diwali is round the corner. The routine remains unvarying year after year.

 For a nano-second perhaps, but the likelier thing would be that the poor boy wouldn't know what to do with the mounds of memories he will inherit. It was with immense relief that I saw most of these things carted away to orphanages, which'd definitely find better use for them.

The rest went to the highest bidding Kabadi_Wala  But, yes, the hoarding instinct can't be banished in a day so I'm hanging on to a few things which still live and breathe for me.

Among them a few brittle letters in a tin toffee box exchanges between my then newly-wed parents; sage advice from dadu to a headstrong me and some sepia photographs. Clutter, did you say? Heirlooms, my friends, heirlooms. And also something for the next generation to do when they spring clean for Diwali.

Yes I read the paper piece of times of india.. which was layered at the bottom of one of the drawer of my chest in store room...and yes while doing the DIWALI Cleaning ...

and I found these flowers I made ........when........I didn't remember.............but............ i still remember i made them for making the neckline(yoke) for my daughter's top....... yes it was in the morning at 10:30 AM
