BG 3.38:Just as a fire is covered by smoke, a mirror is masked by dust, and an embryo is concealed by the womb, similarly one’s knowledge gets shrouded by desire.

It has been reported in various studies that music in general and satsang (singing folk sings in a group) in particular has a positive effect on well-being. I think I will search for  an analysis of what the rural women sing in these songs that form the repertoire of a satsang. My study area will be my Home state i.e. Haryana, a state in India. I will collect/record  songs and  analysed them  to present the religious/spiritual messages that these folk songs convey. I will do content analysis of the songs after categorising them broadly into three categories: songs that sing praises of Gods and Goddesses, sing about the incidences from scriptures and songs that convey spiritual or religious messages. Through this, I will explore d the ways to disseminate spiritual/religious knowledge through folk songs in the local rural community.

श्रीभगवानुवाच |
कुतस्त्वा कश्मलमिदं विषमे समुपस्थितम् |
अनार्यजुष्टमस्वर्ग्यमकीर्तिकरमर्जुन || 2||








2.2: The Supreme Lord said: My dear Arjun, how has this delusion overcome you in this hour of peril? It is not befitting an honorable person. It leads not to the higher abodes, but to disgrace.




Commentary: The word Ārya in our sacred books does not refer to any race or ethnic group.  The Manu Smṛiti defines an Aryan as a highly evolved and cultured person.  “Aryan” connotes goodness, like the term “perfect gentleman.”  The aim of the Vedic scriptures is to induce humans to become Aryans in all respects.  Shree Krishna finds Arjun’s present condition in conflict with that ideal, and so reprimands him by calling attention to his confusion in how to live up to this ideal state of being under the current circumstances.

The Bhagavad Gita, or “Song of God,” effectively begins from here because Shree Krishna, who was quiet until now, starts speaking in this verse.  The Supreme Lord first begins by inducing in Arjun a hunger for knowledge.  He does this by pointing out that his state of confusion is dishonorable and inappropriate for virtuous persons.  He then goes on to remind Arjun of the consequences of delusion, which are pain, infamy, failure in life, and degradation of the soul.

Rather than comforting him, Shree Krishna is making Arjun uncomfortable about his current state.  We all feel uncomfortable when we are confused because it is not the natural condition of the soul.  That feeling of discontentment, if properly channeled, can become a powerful impetus to search for true knowledge.  The suitable resolution of doubt helps a person acquire a deeper understanding than before.  Thus, God sometimes deliberately puts a person in turmoil, so that he or she may be forced to search for knowledge to remove the confusion.  And when the doubt is finally resolved, that person reaches a higher level of understanding.

Chapter 2 verse 1

 

सञ्जय उवाच |

तं तथा कृपयाविष्टमश्रुपूर्णाकुलेक्षणम् |

विषीदन्तमिदं वाक्यमुवाच मधुसूदन: || 1||

 

2.1: Sanjay said: Seeing Arjun overwhelmed with pity, his mind grief-stricken, and his eyes full of tears, Shree Krishna spoke the following words.

 

 

 

 

 

Sanjaya says that when Krishna saw Arjuna in such a state with tears in his eyes he spoke:

 

“Arjuna how these impure thoughts have come to you .It does not befit you.”

 

Arjuna in complete turmoil completely surrenders by sitting with his head bowed, his bows and arrows set aside. He has tears in his eyes and he seeks guidance.

 

Lord Krishna asks Arjuna with a lot of love the reason for so much confusion as it does not suit one who knows the value of life.

 

 

Here we can see Lord Krishna reprimanding his favorite disciple Arjuna.

 

Though Arjuna was from a learned background and well versed, why was he behaving with total body consciousness?

 

When we are on the path, and as we learn and know some things spiritually, and yet we end up taking wrong decisions or making some mistake we face lot of turmoil.

 

 

The question that comes on our mind is that even after having the knowledge how I made a mistake…

 

See even when we are on the path, we are in different stages.

 

Like suppose we have to merge with the sun then some will be just absorbing the rays of the sun, while some would be feeling the warmth and might be nearer to the sun while very few might be within the sun.

 

 

 

This is a journey. Each on a different level of consciousness and so the reactions and actions will be based on that.

 

 

 

At times even though we have traversed much ahead on the journey, some situation might come up where we for a while completely forget who we are and thinking we are this body we react.

 

This is when Krishna will intervene and ask us why we are behaving in such a foolish manner.

 

 

 

This happens when the soul has travelled a little ahead on the path, is seeking and surrenders with all humility unto the supreme.

 

 

 

So however and wherever we are on the journey, let us remember to surrender to the supreme energy with utmost humility.

 

Then we need never fear as to what the consequence will be…as Lord Krishna will definitely take care of us by guiding us.

सञ्जय उवाच |
एवमुक्त्वार्जुन: सङ्ख्ये रथोपस्थ उपाविशत् |
विसृज्य सशरं चापं शोकसंविग्नमानस: || 47||

1.47: Sanjay said: Speaking thus, Arjun cast aside his bow and arrows, and sank into the seat of his chariot, his mind in distress and overwhelmed with grief.

Sanjaya says that saying all the above, Arjuna puts down his bow and arrow and sits on the chariot, his mind overwhelmed with grief.
This ends the 1st chapter of the Gita.
Arjuna is the prime example where the conditioning that has affected shows strongly.
He believes and acts as per the knowledge he has received from his elders and guru.
The deductions are not of his own mind and neither of Lord Krishna.
Though Krishna is on his side, Arjuna has fears, worries and deductions.
Why is this so? It is because he fails to see his true self and is speaking in complete body consciousness.
What is body consciousness? It means thinking that ‘I am the body’ which is completely wrong.
The body belongs to me is the correct understanding.
Though Arjuna is learned he is at this moment of war bound by the conditioning of body consciousness and fails to see who he is.
We too are the same. Even though we all know that we are the soul, eternal…yet we have fears and worries.
We too have our own deductions based on the knowledge we have received from our elders.
Yet, we must not forget that we have a mind and an intellect and we must use it instead of blindly following on the path shown to us by our elders.
The indication is not that elders are wrong, but they too might be following on the path shown to them and in return showing you the path.
Is that the right one? If only we ask this simple question, Krishna would answer our questions like he will do in the forthcoming chapters.
Let us not judge anyone. Instead let each of us take up this task of shedding the conditioning of our mind.
We are not using our intellect. The intellect too has its limitations, yet it has information and as we grow spiritually this intellect turns into viveka.

If we do not question, do not wonder, do not seek answers we will be just living our life as per the rules and regulations preset by society and dying.

Then again taking birth and doing the same thing. Punarapi jananam Punarapi maranam….
The cycle of birth and death of the body will continue…
Are we not trapped in this? Don’t we want a release?
Don’t we want to feel free by knowing and experiencing who we actually are?
Or do we remain trapped in body consciousness and take birth after birth… never realizing the true self?
A question we all need to ponder over as this chapter ends…the answers coming from Krishna in the next chapter which has 72 verses is a treat one could wait for…
How was the first chapter? Is it not a wonder in itself that we have completed the first chapter and truly rearing to go for the next one as we all want to bask in the wisdom that Krishna will reveal?….

1.44: O Janardan (Krishna), I have heard from the learned that those who destroy family traditions dwell in hell for an indefinite period of time.

Lord Krishna the chariot and Arjun

The Bhagavad-gita is the world’s oldest book of wisdom. The ‘As It Is’ edition, now forty years old, translated from the original Sanskrit with clear and straightforward commentary by the great scholar and saints, and, deserves a place on every bookshelf in every home. More importantly, it deserves to be read daily before breakfast, its verses discussed by thoughtful people, and its meaning put into practice by those who wish to see good in this world.

 

Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation of India, read the Gita during spells in prison and when in seclusion. He said that when he no longer saw a silver lining on the dark cloud in his life he would pick up his Gita and read words of comfort. English explorers and foreign scholars have all marvelled at the Gita – that so much deep philosophy could be placed in one book.

वेपथुश्च शरीरे मे रोमहर्षश्च जायते || 29||
गाण्डीवं स्रंसते हस्तात्वक्चै व परिदह्यते |
न च शक्नोम्यवस्थातुं भ्रमतीव च मे मन: || 30|| 
निमित्तानि च पश्यामि विपरीतानि केशव |
न च श्रेयोऽनुपश्यामि हत्वा स्वजनमाहवे || 31||


1.29-31:
My whole body shudders; my hair is standing on end. My bow, the Gāṇḍīv, is slipping from my hand, and my skin is burning all over. My mind is in quandary and whirling in confusion; I am unable to hold myself steady any longer. O Krishna, killer of the Keshi demon, I only see omens of misfortune. I do not foresee how any good can come from killing my own kinsmen in this battle.


Commentary: As Arjun thought of the consequences of the war, he grew worried and sad. The same Gāṇḍīv bow, the sound of which had terrified powerful enemies, began dropping from his hand. His mind was reeling, thinking it was a sin to wage the war. In this unsteadiness of mind, he even descended to the level of accepting superstitious omens portending disastrous failures and imminent consequences.

How does that brilliant sense of clarity translate to our feelings and thoughts?

Indeed, time is somehow copied in us and without our will, it affects it

पाञ्चजन्यं हृषीकेशो देवदत्तं धनञ्जय: |
पौण्ड्रं दध्मौ महाशङ्खं भीमकर्मा वृकोदर: || 15||


 1.15: Hrishikesh blew his conch shell, called Panchajanya, and Arjun blew the Devadutta. Bheem, the voracious eater and performer of herculean tasks, blew his mighty conch, called Paundra.
commentary:The word “Hrishikesh” means Lord of the mind and senses, and has been used for Shree Krishna. He is the Supreme Master of everyone’s mind and senses, including his own. Even while performing amazing pastimes on the planet Earth, he maintained complete mastery over his own mind and senses.

Burlap projects, Holy Bhagwad Geeta

The other day I walked out of the grain store with two sacful of grain, nothing to do with the grains there was not any need now, we had already drumful in our kitchen.i bought them for the grain sacs that is burlap sacs  only . I love burlap.

Reaching home I hurredly emptied the bags and took photos of them . I realized how great they looked together. Ready for their project, but pretty great just in photos.

My obsession with grain sacs is in full swing

Don’t you love burlap? Isn’t it elegant when paired with the right images?

 

 

 I cut them in half. unravel half of them for twine...

 then I created a  flower vase cum a pitcher box shown above.   Its size is 10 inches tall, circmfrance of the belly is 20 inches opening  diameter is narrow just 3.5 inches. All the twine with natural colour is highlighted with a tinch of red and green colour, its because of the print on the grain sac.

Its made by me and by hand in the rag basket style of coiling and weaving twine around a cord. Rag bskets are usually made by wrapping strips of fabric around a core. In this case, cable wire emptied its copper wire and “sewing” into previous row. Its lid is made from the same twine wrapped wire.

This vase is created by coiling and weaving unraveled twines of grain sac around sturdy cable wire. My cording is cable wire, i cut it from one side pull out its copper wire. After removing the wire and having cut in its belly it was sturdy and round like the new one. It gave me 5 rows per inch gauge.

This vase will display dried or silk arrangement, but you can surprise your guests with flowers from your garden by using the plastic or stainless-steel or glass tumbler.

In case you want to stack things of your purse you can make its lid.....

Its really multipurpose item; i use it to hold my glue-gun, my small rulers, brushes etc, so it is aready for use. Could be used as a fresh or dried flowers or to hold bunch of needles too.

The lid here is something unfit  i will make another one to fit on the rim of the vase. If you want to use it as aflower vase you can place it along its side it will add to its beauty and will look chic.

 I had an abandoned hot case and I crocheted un outer cover with unraveled sac twine for it emblished int with beads.

It look delicious in twine

I attached burlap pieces inside the basket

here my belongings are sitting in it ,isn't they are in  lovely position?

 

I wrapped some twine around empty tin for my plants.

then wrapped around a plastic paint tin to make flower vase

 

crocheted a kitchen scrubber with leftover twine,how lovely it is with red and green details

अत्र शूरा महेष्वासा भीमार्जुनसमा युधि
युयुधानो विराटश्च द्रुपदश्च महारथ: || 4||

धृष्टकेतुश्चेकितान: काशिराजश्च वीर्यवान् |
पुरुजित्कुन्तिभोजश्च शैयश्च नरपुङ्गव: || 5||

युधामन्युश्च विक्रान्त उत्तमौजाश्च वीर्यवान् |
सौभद्रो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्व एव महारथा: || 6||

1.4-6: Behold in their ranks are many powerful warriors, like Yuyudhan, Virat, and Drupad, wielding mighty bows and equal in military prowess to Bheem and Arjun. There are also accomplished heroes like Dhrishtaketu, Chekitan, the gallant King of Kashi, Purujit, Kuntibhoj, and Shaibya—all the best of men. In their ranks, they also have the courageous Yudhamanyu, the gallant Uttamauja, the son of Subhadra, and the sons of Draupadi, who are all great warrior chiefs.

Commentary: In the eyes of Duryodhan, due to his fear of the looming catastrophe, the army mobilized by the Pandavas seemed larger than it actually was.  Expressing his anxiety, he pointed out the mahārathīs (warriors who could single handedly match the strength of ten thousand ordinary warriors) present on the Pandavas side.  Duryodhan mentioned the exceptional heroes amidst the Pandavas ranks, who were all great military commanders equal in strength to Arjun and Bheem, and who would be formidable in the battle.
